Love and Service

I have been thinking a lot about this month's message and was directed towards a more unusual subject for the month of February.  February is typically a month that is focused on love, chocolates, gifts, and flowers.  So many people are thinking about that special someone, a friend that has made a difference, or even loved ones that they adore and appreciate.  I too have been thinking about this but in a more unconventional way.

I have decided to focus this message on SERVICE. We can show someone how much we truly care by doing something nice for them. I know that traditionally Valentine's Day is all about having dinner out on the town or buying some kind of gift.  However, I thought that there could be a greater way to show how much we care. We can serve them.

The great thing about service is that it not only makes those you serve happy - but it brings you joy as well.  Former Prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Gordon B. Hinckley once said, "The happiest people I know are those that lose themselves in the service of others."  How true is that?! We can really make a difference in others' lives, as well as our own, when we lose ourselves in service.

Never underestimate your ability to make someone else's life better. Even if you never know it.

This month I challenge you to find a way to serve the ones you love.  Here's a list of ideas you can use:

  1.  Cook a loved one's favorite meal
  2.  Bake a favorite dessert
  3.  Make a card and express your gratitude for all they have done
  4.  Clean their car
  5.  Do the dishes so the other doesn't have to
  6.  Draw a bubble bath and leave them with a favorite magazine/book, drink, and cookie/snack.
  7.  Provide a kid-free day
  8.  Offer to give a foot/hand massage
  9.  Write reasons why you love them and appreciate them on post-its. Stick them on a mirror in  the shape of a heart.  Have it there for them to see in the morning.
  10.  Leave a note somewhere like a lunch box so they can find it. Let them know they make your  heart smile!

There are so many things you can do! That's the great thing about service, the list can go on and on. Choose just one thing you can do this week to show your appreciation and love without having to spend anything.  Many times it's the gift of service that is remembered much more than a gift of money.

Happy Valentines to you all!! May we take time this week to serve that special someone with a smile and give a little love from our heart!

Questions to think about:
Is service important? Why? How can you benefit from serving someone else? Is it hard for you to be served? Why?

Family Home Evening Ideas:
Plan a "Secret Service" activity.  Have each member of the family pick a name from a hat.  The person they choose is the person they will serve that week.  You can choose one day in the week to secretly serve that special someone or you can serve them spontaneously on any day in the week. Come up with a few ideas as a family that could be great acts of service. During the following family home evening everyone has to share who picked who and what they did to serve.
